Maji Ami, Tibetan Restaurant
Maji Ami serves great Tibetan dishes to those of us not brave enough to ride the forty hour train to Tibet. I found this place while trying to find Steak&Eggs, which is right next door.
Location: In Chaoyang. Behind the Friendship Store, next to Steak&Eggs, on 秀水南街。
Recommended food:
Nan, Tibetan-style. This is the grand-daddy of nan, an inch or more thick, VERY filling. Wonderful until you’ve eaten too much of it.
Tashi-delek—beef, yak, yak marrow, (yak?) cheese, carrots, all braised in a brownish sauce. Think ridiculously hearty yak stew.
Yogurt drinks (they have a wide-variety). They didn’t make me sick (something I worry Chinese dairy will do).
Polenta-like chicken dish. I’m sorry that I forgot the name, but you’ll see it when you’re there.
Decor: Tibetan masks hang from the walls and beams, dim lighting but not in a bad way (it’s lit by lamps, not ceiling lights). It feels pretty traditional Tibetan. (Granted, I don’t really know what traditional Tibetan is supposed to feel like). Clean toilets. I like the seats by the windows the best.
Price: Bill for two massive eaters was about 90 yuan.
Hours and Phone number: 12pm-2am. #010 6506-9616
